Andriy Bludov "Crypthoteka"

Andriy Bludov «Crypthoteka»

GogolFest 2009
12.09 – 27.09

The project of famous Ukrainian artist Andriy Bludov was on display at GogolFEST-2009 courtesy of Bottega Gallery. The installation, known as «Crypthoteka», consists of two cubes (120x150cm) made of wood and straws painted blue.
On top of the cubes there are freely picked artifacts, while seemingly simple are not so at the same time: photos, hand-made carpets, old shoes and the like. Some are valuable mementos for the artist or simply beautiful things with esthetical appeal, all of which then become an art object. According to the ready-made tradition when an object is moved from a non-art to an art space by an artist’s wish the object can then be viewed from an unexpected side and display characteristics previously unknown.
The name “Crypthoteka” has one root in common with the word cryptography which means a letter with a cypher code and secret symbols. Therefore, each element of the installation is a symbol. They are all symbols of their particular world, but which do not have any definite meaning because the symbol or sign does not have any kind of secret meaning now anymore than it did before. Instead, they are open, rhythmically changing their meaning, and in this case, define the artist’s world. This approach creates an area for the viewer’s free association and personal interpretation.
